1. The American Heart Association held its 57th annual Philadelphia Heart Ball on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott in Center City. The inclement weather could not keep away the more than 700 guests that gathered to celebrate the contributions of the two honorees: George V. Hager Jr., CEO, Genesis HealthCare, who received the Heart of Philadelphia Award and Dr. Morris Kotler, Chairman Emeritus, Division of Cardiovascular Disease, Einstein Medical Center, who received the Edward S. Cooper, MD Award. Guests also heard the testimony of Derek Fitzgerald, who battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, only then to struggle with heart disease — dilated cardiomyopathy — after his remission. Fitzgerald, who is now an Iron Man Triathlete, says he lives every day “like his [heart] donor is watching.” The Philadelphia Heart Ball benefit raised more than $1.7M for local heart disease and stroke research and education. Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, remain the No. 1 killer both here in Pennsylvania and across the country. The Heart of Philadelphia, formerly known as Heart Ball, provides our community with a fun and exciting way to join the fight against heart disease and stroke. This event will feature a celebratory evening of dining, dancing and bidding on coveted live and silent auction items — all to benefit research and education to help protect our community and loved ones against heart disease and stroke.  (From left) Allyson Lindauer, Tawny Jackson, Cara Feldman, Sarah Smart, Deena Thornton and Christina Crews paused for a photo during the cocktail reception.

MLART_PHOTOS0011. The Main Line Art Center hosted a free public reception on Friday, February 21, 2014 featuring Humankind, a new media exhibition. Humankind is part of a collaboration with Main Line Art Center’s new Digital Media program beginning in April with the Spring session.  As part of the center’s ongoing effort to provide students with the latest advancements in arts education, the new curriculum will highlight digital media as a medium unto itself and will enable more traditional media, such as painting, ceramics, and jewelry, to incorporate the digital arts.  The new technology will engage students of all ages and in all levels of Main Line Art Center’s programs, including Accessible Art programs for children, teens, and adults with disabilities.  With the launch of the new program, Main Line Art Center is now the only art center in our region with facilities that include both a traditional wet dark room for photography and a digital imaging studio.   Lori Waselchuk  (right) is a documentary photographer whose photographs have appeared in magazines and newspapers worldwide, including Newsweek, LIFE, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times. She has produced photographs for several international aid organizations including CARE, the UN World Food Program, Medecins Sans Frontieres, and the Vaccine Fund.  Waselchuk has received many prestigious awards including the 2014 Leeway Foundation’s Transformation Award, the 2012 Pew Fellowship for the Arts, and the Aaron Siskind Foundation’s 2009 Individual Photographer Fellowship.  She has also received a 2008 Distribution Grant from the Documentary Photography Project of the Open Society Institute, the 2007 PhotoNOLA Review Prize, and the 2004 Southern African Gender and Media Award for Photojournalism.  Waselchuk was also a nominee for the 2009 Santa Fe Prize for Photography, a finalist in the 2008 Aperture West Book Prize, and a finalist in the 2006 and 2008 Critical Mass Review.  Her work is exhibited internationally and is part of collections including the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Portland Museum of Art and the South African National Gallery.  Waselchuk created two traveling exhibitions of her photographic documentary, Grace Before Dying (Umbrage Editions, 2011) that has been shown in over 60 venues in the United States since 2009. Amie Potsic (left) began her tenure as Executive Director of Main Line Art Center in July of 2012.  Prior to that, she served as Director of the Career Development Program at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) in Philadelphia where she curated exhibitions and planned professional development programming for emerging and professional artists. Potsic has curated over 70 exhibitions at venues including The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Moore College of Art & Design. KOREA_OPENING001a 1. On Thursday, February 27, 2014, the Women’s Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art hosted a gala evening to celebrate the ”Treasures from Korea” opening. A sweeping panorama, ”Treasures from Korea” celebrates the artistic achievements of the Joseon dynasty, a line of twenty-seven monarchs that ruled the Korean peninsula for more than five hundred years and left a substantial legacy for modern Korea. A variety of objects, including painted screens, scrolls, calligraphy, furnishings, costumes, accessories, and ritual wares used in ancestral rites and Buddhist worship, explore the roles of king and court, the distinct spheres of men and women in society, and religious beliefs, all underpinned by the ideals of Confucianism. This is the first full-scale American exhibition to be devoted to art of the Joseon dynasty. Comprised of more than 150 works drawn primarily from the National Museum of Korea’s collection and supplemented by objects from public and private collections, ”Treasures from Korea” presents American audiences with a rare opportunity to see some of Korea’s artistic masterpieces, including a number designated as national treasures. The exhibition includes interactive displays of select objects, a free audio tour, and a family guide. In addition, a broad range of programs such as film screenings, family celebrations, performances, lectures, and dining events are offered throughout the run of the exhibition. ”Treasures from Korea” represents one of two international exhibitions that are part of a collaborative exchange between the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Museum of Korea (NMK), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), and the Terra Foundation for American Art. In early 2013, Art Across America, featuring some of the finest examples of American art drawn from the collections of the four US museums, traveled to the NMK in Seoul and the Daejeon Museum of Art. The exhibit will run at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from March 2, 2014 to May 26, 2014. The exhibition is organized by the National Museum of Korea, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.  Models wearing Hanbok Designer Fashions were pictured in the Great Stair Hall following the fashion presentation.

About a 1,000 of Philadelphia’s social, civic, and business leaders attended this “red-tie” event featuring cuisine from 25 of the finest restaurants in the area, dancing to live music, and an unrivaled silent auction and raffle. Proceeds from The Red Ball benefit disaster relief and Red Cross House – The Center for Disaster Recovery, a one-of-a-kind short-term housing facility in University City. Every year, hundreds of local families find refuge at this facility and begin their recovery from fires, floods, and other disasters. Red Cross House is a model for disaster recovery nationwide. It offers families a stable and supportive environment while they work to rebuild their lives. Since opening its doors in April 2003, Red Cross House has been called “home” by more than 10,000 people who had no place else to turn in their greatest time of need. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. ASE_ADDRESSING001

 1. The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) will kick off the 113th Annual Student Exhibition (ASE) with a Preview Party, hosted by PAFA’s Women’s Board, on Thursday, May 8, 2014, 4:00-8:30pm at PAFA, 128 North Broad Street in Philadelphia. The gala evening is the major annual fundraiser of PAFA’s Women’s Board, and it provides the first chance to view and purchase over 1,000 paintings, sculptures, works on paper and installations created by PAFA’s BFA students, third- and fourth-year Certificate program students, and MFA candidates, all on the verge of their professional careers. Preview Party guests have the opportunity to discuss the works with the artists, present throughout the evening. Students retain the majority of the purchase price of works sold, and all proceeds from the Preview Party support PAFA student scholarships. Accessible prices, typically in the range of just under $100 to $5,000, have created an enthusiastic following throughout the greater Philadelphia region. The sale continues until the exhibition closes on June 1; however, the majority of ASE artworks sales occur during the Preview Party. A recipient of the 2005 National Medal of Arts presented by the President of the United States, PAFA is a recognized leader in Fine Arts education. Nearly every major American artist has taught, studied, or exhibited at PAFA. The institution’s world-class collection of American art continues to grow and provides what only a few other art institutions in the world offer: the rare combination of an outstanding Museum and an extraordinary faculty known for its commitment to students and for the stature and quality of its artistic work. Founded in 1950 and named the Women’s Committee until 2001, the Women’s Board is aligned with the values of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and works to support PAFA in accordance with its mission statement. It assists the Board of Trustees and the President of PAFA in the implementation of programs, supports the Museum and the School through fundraising and volunteerism, and promotes awareness and appreciation of American art and American artists. The Women’s Board produces one of PAFA’s most important fundraising events of the year, the Annual Student Exhibition Preview Party. Proceeds support student scholarships, as well as museum and school programs, the commencement luncheon, and other special projects throughout the year. In the 60-year history of the Women’s Board, its members and events have contributed more than 10 million dollars in net proceeds to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA).  (From left) Donna Salvo, Monique Silvi, Nicole McLaughlin and Cathy Hozack joined Linda Caldwell (second right) during the invitation addressing  meeting and luncheon.
