Philadelphia, PA – APRIL 14, 2014 – Radnor Township and Radnor Police are pleased to announce the official addition of their inaugural K-9 Police team. The dogs are important resources to the department but were not even an option until the community stepped in. Specifically, local business owner Michael Smyth of The Great Britains Automotive Group, who proudly sponsored the K-9 Unit, by providing a special Black Pack Edition Land Rover LR4. The 2014 LR4 is specially fitted and will be used by the department to transport the expertly trained K-9 duo, ‘Rover’ and ‘Discovery.’

“The addition of the K-9 Unit will allow Radnor Police Department to maintain the highest level of safety and security for the community,” says Lt. Chris Flanagan, Radnor Police Department.

The dogs will specialize in protective bomb sweeps, searching for hidden suspects or missing persons, and are being trained to assist with investigating crimes such as burglaries and robberies. The Radnor K-9 Unit will provide state-of-the-art proactive police sweeps in several of the local colleges, schools, and small to large-scale community events. Rover and Discovery will graduate from training on the second week of June, fully certified for Patrol and Bomb detection duties, and Radnor Police and Radnor Township are celebrating with a formal ceremony on Wednesday, May 14th at 11:30am at Land Rover Jaguar of the Main Line.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to have the opportunity to help Radnor Township continue to be one of the best communities in the US,” says Michael Smyth. “Having Rover and Discovery on patrol in a Land Rover LR4 is very exciting and also consistent with the rich history of our brand “

Although the K-9 team can be deployed for many reasons, including the tracking of missing persons, criminal suspects and the detection of bombs and other explosive materials – the unit will still need regular training and yearly re-certifications. The Radnor Township, Radnor Police Department and The Great Britains Automotive Group are also looking to add another vehicle, in order to double the capabilities of K-9 unit. Donations to help the Radnor Police K-9 Fund can be made out to Radnor Police K-9 Fund and dropped off or mailed to: Radnor Police K-9 Fund, 301 Iven Avenue, Wayne PA, 19087.

Baldwin School celebrates its 125th anniversary

BALDWIN_ANNIVERSARY0011.  How do you throw a fabulous party 125 years in the making? There’s only one way to do it. Have a Baldwin girl plan it! Natanya DiBona ’91 is often thought of as the lady in white, having brought Dîner en Blanc to Philadelphia. And, as anyone who knows Natanya, or has been lucky enough to go to Dîner en Blanc can attest, her name is synonymous with spectacular, unforgettable extravaganzas. Coming up with the theme was easy – making it a reality was so much more. “I knew I wanted the focus to be on the Residence because it’s so iconic and means so much to all of us,” said Natanya. “But I also wanted to use other parts of the campus. When I saw all of the wonderful memorabilia now displayed in the passageway, it hit me that this party had to really celebrate what it means to have 125 years of history.” So, a party was planned that took guests through time and place, beginning with that nostalgic passageway. Throughout the night guests were transported from a turn-of the century May Day Celebration to the roaring ‘20s, the soda shops of the ‘50s and beyond. In each of the five themed areas, particular attention was paid to the food, décor, costumes, and entertainment to evoke the mood and feel of that time period. Food was provided by Feast Your Eyes Catering who, according to Natanya, “knocked it out of the park” with their creative menu design. Thanks to the generosity of Steve Grasse and Sonia Kurtz Grasse ’91, specialty craft cocktails (think Bee’s Knees and “Root” Beer Floats) were provided in each of the areas by Art in the Age. Natanya knew only too well that entertainment is the key ingredient to an unforgettable event. So, she turned to her friends at Mole Street Productions who provided the sound, lighting, and entertainment for Diner en Blanc. The result was an evening filled with pops of entertainment throughout the spaces that included: Drew Nugent and Midnight Society, The Minsky Sisters, Perseverance Jazz Band, musicians from Hot Club Philly, and DJ Bruce. Most importantly, performances by Baldwin’s very own B-Flats also took place throughout the evening! There was also an interactive photo booth  and in the Main Hall,  Denise Fike created fashion illustrations worthy of the era. Lastly, after an evening of great food and entertainment, the party concluded with a champagne toast and fireworks display over Middle Field. Natanya (left) paused for a photo with Amanda Parlett and Norah Maxwell during the event.

DAISY_DAY001 1. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s 58th Annual Daisy Day Luncheon and Fashion Show raised more than $1.6 million to support the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment. It took place at at The Park Hyatt at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia on Thursday, May 8, 2014 and more than 700 guests attended. The annual Daisy Day Luncheon and Fashion Show raised more than $1.6 million to support the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment.  World leaders in their field, the Center’s team has pushed the boundaries of medicine and established techniques to surgically repair birth defects before birth, while a baby is still in its mother’s womb. Proceeds from the event will support these life-saving treatments and breakthrough discoveries, so the Center can help even more families in need. This year’s fashion show, presented by Saks Fifth Avenue, featured Zac Posen’s Fall 2014 Collection. Nancy A. Wolfson celebrated her 16th consecutive year as chair of Daisy Day. This year’s honorary co-chairs were Mary and Jed Kelly, parents of now 7-year-old Addison Kelly, who underwent a rare life-saving surgery before birth to remove a tumor from her chest. Mary spoke at Daisy Day about the remarkable care the entire Kelly family received thanks to the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment. Since its founding in 1995, CHOP’s Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment has attracted expectant mothers from all 50 states – and more than 60 countries – who are carrying babies with known birth defects. It is the largest program of its kind in the world, providing fetal diagnosis, prenatal management, delivery and postnatal care.“We are honored that the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment was selected as this year’s beneficiary. ”These much needed funds will allow us to offer hope to even more expectant parents and their unborn babies,” said N. Scott Adzick, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and director of the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment. The event kicked off with a silent auction featuring high-end jewelry, designer handbags, sports memorabilia, trips and much more, followed by an energetic live auction during lunch that included a Zac Posen once-in-a-lifetime experience, a trip to Costa Rica, tickets to The Voice and America’s Got Talent, and a Philadelphia Eagles Experience. The event concluded with the spectacular Saks Fifth Avenue runway show featuring fashion designer and “Project Runway” judge Zac Posen. The Annual Daisy Day Luncheon and Fashion Show was founded by the Auxiliary of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1953. Since its inception, when volunteers sold daisies on street corners throughout the city, the Daisy Day Luncheon and Community Campaign have grown to attract the support of schools and businesses across the region, raising more than $17 million for world-class patient care and pioneering research. Dr. Steven Altschuler, Lori Howell, Dr. N. Scott Adzick, Nancy Wolfson and Dr. Mark Johnson joined Zac Posen and the Kelly family on the runway before the luncheon began.

1. Approximately 850 business and community leaders dressed in red attended the 11th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon held at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott. The Go Red For Women Luncheon is a life-changing experience that focuses on three areas that support the fight against heart disease in women: heightening awareness of the issue, creating a passionate call-to-action and generating funds to support education and research. The 2014 “Woman of Heart” award was presented to Dr. Mariell Jessup, Associate Chief of Clinical Affairs, Cardiovascular Medicine, Penn Heart and Vascular Center. In addition, heart disease survivor, Krista Savino, 29, shared her tale of survival. Cardiovascular disease remains the No. 1 killer of women, claiming the life of about one woman per minute. Heart disease and stroke take the lives of more women than the next five leading causes of death combined – including all forms of cancer. In addition, women seem to have less time to take care of themselves, putting them at higher risk. The luncheon urged women to make their health a top priority. Go Red wants to empower women with knowledge to live longer and stronger lives. (From left) John J. Lynch, III, President & CEO, Main Line Health, Mary Kate Coghlan, Bridget Therriault and Megan Kuttis of Main Line Health were pictured arriving at the luncheon.

ZOOCATS_PREVIEW0011 . A special preview of Big Cat Crossing took place at the Philadelphia Zoo on Friday, May 9. Big Cat Crossing, an extension of Zoo360, Philadelphia Zoo’s revolutionary, first-in-the-world animal travel and exploration system, promises the most majestic of creatures more room to roam. Big Cat Crossing is a 330-foot mesh-engineered overhead passageway that extends from First Niagara Big Cat Falls and the Zoo’s main visitor path. The trail encourages their large felines, lions, tigers, pumas, jaguars and more, to stretch their legs and explore. The expanded footprint will fuel the curiosity of the Zoo’s big cats, as well as that of each of their guests. The Philadelphia Zoo’s 42-acre Victorian garden is home to more than 1,300 animals, many of them rare and endangered. By connecting people with wildlife, the Philadelphia Zoo creates joyful discovery and inspires action for animals and habitats. Cheetahs, hippos, giraffes and much more make the Zoo Philadelphia’s leading family attraction with over 1.2 million visitors last year. The gala evening is the major annual fundraiser of PAFA’s Women’s Board, and it provides the first chance to view and purchase over 1,000 paintings, sculptures, works on paper and installations created by PAFA’s BFA students, third- and fourth-year Certificate program students, and MFA candidates, all on the verge of their professional careers. Preview Party guests had the opportunity to discuss the works with the artists, present throughout the evening. Students retain the majority of the purchase price of works sold, and all proceeds from the Preview Party support PAFA student scholarships. Accessible prices, typically in the range of just under $100 to $5,000, have created an enthusiastic following throughout the greater Philadelphia region. The sale continues until the exhibition closes on June 1; however, the majority of ASE artworks sales occur during the Preview Party. Honorary Chairs for the 2014 Preview Party are Pia and Richard Halloran, and the Co-Chairs are Dorothy Mather Ix and Carmen Navarro Pelaez.
