RADNOR TOWNSHIP POLICE ADD K-9 UNIT WITH SUPPORT FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND LAND ROVER MAIN LINE

Radnor Township and Radnor Police announced the official addition of their inaugural K-9 Police team during a ceremony held at Land Rover Jaguar of the Main Line in Wayne. The dogs are important resources to the department but were not even an option until the community stepped in. Specifically, local business owner Michael Smyth of The Great Britains Automotive Group, who proudly sponsored the K-9 Unit, by providing a special Black Pack Edition Land Rover LR4. The 2014 LR4 is specially fitted and will be used by the department to transport the expertly trained K-9 duo, ‘Rover’ and ‘Discovery.’

“The addition of the K-9 Unit will allow Radnor Police Department to maintain the highest level of safety and security for the community,” says Lt. Chris Flanagan, Radnor Police Department. The dogs will specialize in protective bomb sweeps, searching for hidden suspects or missing persons, and are being trained to assist with investigating crimes such as burglaries and robberies. The Radnor K-9 Unit will provide state-of-the-art proactive police sweeps in several of the local colleges, schools, and small to large-scale community events. Rover and Discovery will graduate from training on the second week of June, fully certified for Patrol and Bomb detection duties, and Radnor Police and Radnor Township celebrated
with a formal ceremony on Wednesday, May 14th at 11:30am at Land Rover Jaguar of the Main Line.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to have the opportunity to help Radnor Township continue to be one of the best communities in the US,” says Michael Smyth. “Having Rover and Discovery on patrol in a Land Rover LR4 is very exciting and also consistent with the rich history of our brand “

Although the K-9 team can be deployed for many reasons, including the tracking of missing persons, criminal suspects and the detection of bombs and other explosive materials – the unit will still need regular training and yearly re-certifications. The Radnor Township, Radnor Police Department and The Great Britains Automotive Group are also looking to add another vehicle, in order to double the capabilities of K-9 unit. Donations to help the Radnor Police K-9 Fund can be made out to Radnor Police K-9 Fund and dropped off or mailed to: Radnor Police K-9 Fund, 301 Iven Avenue, Wayne PA, 19087.

The event also featured the Saturday Club’s wrap-up meeting where members celebrate their accomplishments during the year. They also  enjoyed refreshments and shopping at a variety of boutiques before the luncheon was served. The Saturday Club was formed to fill a need for women in the community to enrich their own lives outside the home. The club’s official motto “Dare to be Wise” gives a clue to what ladies of the late 1880′s faced when attempting to broaden their horizons. At the time, it was radical for women to meet outside the home or even call their association a club. DEVON HORSE SHOW’S FIRST NIGHT, ITS UNOFFICIAL OPENING!

First Night at Devon, the annual Art Gallery at Devon opening and unofficial kick-off to the 118th Devon Horse Show and Country Fair, took place on Wednesday evening, May 21, 2014. The event, one of the most eagerly awaited of spring was attended by 200 art lovers and Devon devotees.  As guests perused the offering of over 500 pieces of original framed art, as well as several hundred unframed originals and reproductions, they were treated to a lovely cocktail reception.  Several of the Devon Country Fair boutiques offered an opportunity to shop early, and with horses warming up in the ring, First Night is truly a precursor to the eleven day Devon Horse Show and Country Fair.

“There is something really magical about First Night,” said Devon Country Fair Co-Chairman, Buttons Corkhill. “The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is such an important event for our community, both in terms of equestrian competition and what we are able to do for Bryn Mawr Hospital. A year of planning is about to come to fruition.  It’s really special to celebrate the opening of the show on a beautiful evening with people who love art, and love Devon, and work so hard to make it a success.”

Guests sipped the signature cocktail, a cucumber margarita, and nibbled on light fare with a southwestern flair while enjoying live piano music under the sycamore trees. Three items were offered in a live auction; the original artwork for the official 2014 Devon poster by Susan Sponenberg, a painting by Devon’s Chairman Emeritus, Leonard King, and a piece to be commissioned by Genevieve Snyder.  Original works in the gallery, by over 65 artists, reflect the equestrian life and scenes of rural Chester Country and the surrounding areas.  Some of the most highly regarded regional artists are represented as well as artists from as far afield as California.

First Night at Devon is made possible through the generosity of its sponsors: Bryn Mawr Trust, Freeman’s Auctions, Thos. Moser, Haverford Trust, Janney, and UAS. Proceeds of First Night benefit the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Foundation, a nonprofit organization.  The sale of artwork in the Art Gallery at Devon benefits Bryn Mawr Hospital.  The gallery is open May 22 through June 1 with the same hours as the rest of the Devon Country Fair, 10 a.m. to approximately 9:30pm, opening at 11 a.m. on Sundays and closing at approximately 8 p.m. on Thursday May 22, and 3 p.m. on Sunday June 1.

The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair began in 1896 as a one day horse show and has grown into the largest and oldest multi-discipline outdoor horse show in the country. Since 1919, proceeds of the Devon Country Fair have benefitted Bryn Mawr Hospital. To date, nearly $15 million dollars has been donated to the hospital. When adjusted for inflation, that is over $50 million dollars.  The Devon Country Fair is run entirely by volunteers.

 1. The world famous Budweiser Clydesdales paraded around the Dixon Oval during The Devon Horse Show’s Grand Prix Night on Thursday, May 29, 2014.  The beautiful “gentle giants” from the world’s leading brewer pulled the famous red Studebaker beer delivery wagon and at the controls were two expert drivers (and a dalmation dog!) dressed in the traditional green and red delivery uniform of yesteryear. The Budweiser Clydesdales cover about 100,000 miles a year and receive over 5,000 requests annually to appear in parades, promotions, fairs, and horse shows.   Most importantly, these horses are featured in numerous television and print commercials, making them the most recognized corporate symbol in the world.

STEDMONDS_DEDICATION001 1. The Women’s Auxiliary of St. Edmond’s Home for Children hosted the dedication of a recently completed Special Care Unit on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the facility in Rosemont. The event began with a blessing for the new unit by Bishop Robert P. Maginnis and remarks by past president Mary Packer and current president, Lisa Figge. This was followed by a tour of the unit and refreshments. The Women’s Auxiliary for St. Edmond’s Home for Children was founded in 1917 by the Archbishop of Philadelphia, the Most Reverend Edmond F. Prendergast.  Archbishop Prendergast had founded the Home for the care and training of children with disabilities in 1916.  Mrs. Mary Mundy was asked to organize an auxiliary for the purpose of raising funds to maintain the Home and supply nursing care and  therapy aids for the children. Mrs. Mundy and a group of Catholic laywomen set up an organization able to achieve these goals and continue the service and care of the children of the Home for over seventy years to the present time. St. Edmond’s Home is the first Catholic Home for children with disabilities in the United States.  It was opened in 1916 by Philadelphia Archbishop Edmond Prendergast.  The original home, at 44th Street and Haverford Avenue, under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, primarily served children affected by polio.  In 1956 the Home moved to Roberts Road in Rosemont.  Bishop Maginnis paused for a photo with St. Edmond’s administrator, Denise Clofine (left), and Women’s Auxiliary president, Lisa Figge (right).

Diner en Blanc preview party held at Williams-Sonoma at the Bellevue Hotel, Philadelphia

DOB_PREVIEW001

 1. The elegant Parisian pop-up picnic, Dîner en Blanc, hosted a preview party on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Williams-Sonoma at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia. Guests sampled food from Garces Catering and Di Bruno Bros. and cocktails from Lillet. Touché Accessories sold fascinators and other great accessories and some attendees entered a contest for the best themed table decor. The “dinner in white,” is like a gustatory Brigadoon, equal parts mystery, anachronism and caprice! Now attended by thousands at some of the best-known Parisian spaces, it began humbly in 1988. That year, François Pasquier returned to Paris after a few years abroad and held a dinner party to reconnect with friends. So many wanted to come that he asked them to convene at the Bois de Boulogne and to dress in white, so they could find each other! Event chair Natanya DiBona (left) paused for a photo with Conni McDonnell, owner of Touché Accessories, and Lisa Silveri during the preview event. This year’s Parisian picnic will take place on Thursday, August 21, and it will be the largest in Philly so far with 3,400 seats planned (last year’s was 2,550 seats)!
